During the first week of the December holidays, Spoudazo stepped in as a service provider for Reisa Renewable Energy Investments SA and facilitated their Girl Effect holiday programme for 50 young girls, aged 12 - 19 years. Ten learners from five different schools (Maikaelelo Primary, Langberg High, Sishen Intermediate Mine School, Debeng Primary and Gamagara High) in the Kathu area participated in the holiday intervention. The holiday program (4 - 7 December 2019) was designed to empower learners to gain awareness of where they come from, who they are and who they can become; exposing them to information that can help them make better decisions for their future by means of various workshops.
The holiday program involved a three-night stay in the lovely Aha Kathu Hotel and three days of interactive workshops at the Uitsig Conference facilities. An additional sponsorship was sourced from Kathu Solar to host a documentary evening presenting “I am Malala”, on the welcome night. Popcorn, snacks, pizzas and informal discussions served as an icebreaker to a week of personal growth. Each girl also received a copy of the book, “I am Malala”.
The girls also enjoyed a bit of glamour as a gala dinner was hosted at the Aha Kathu Hotel with Margo Fargo as the guest speaker who added inspiration, hope and humour to the evening.
The Girl Effect holiday program during December served as an important follow-up to previous Reisa Girl Effect Conversations during women’s month in 2019 that tackled topics such as: menstruation; sex and sexual transmitted diseases; sexual assault and sexual consent; family planning and teen pregnancies. Sexual assault and sexual consent were amongst the conversations held, which assisted learners in understanding their rights. Partner social workers provided counselling and support to girls in various schools and the principal social worker entrenched all support on a weekly basis throughout the school terms.
